Alice Coltrane 'Africa: Live At Carnegie Hall 1971'

$29.99

In 1971, a benefit was held at Carnegie Hall for the Intergal Yoga Institute. Amongst the headline attractions was a performance by a hastily assembled "All-Stars" band whose members included Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison and Alice Coltrane. Together they played an epic, half-hour long interpretation of John Coltrane's partially improvised hard-bop and modal masterpiece "Africa". Here that piece gets issued again, with the recording split into two parts to fit on the record. Their version is utterly inspired - a wild, intoxicating and energizing spiritual jazz interpretation in which all players (including two drummers and bassists) are given a chance to shine. In a word: sublime.
